Men sometimes speak as if humility and meekness would rob us of what is noble and bold and manlike. O that all would believe that this is the nobility of the kingdom of heaven, that this is the royal spirit that the King of heaven displayed, that this is Godlike, to humble oneself, to become the servant of all!
~ Andrew Murray
Behold My Servant, Whom I uphold, My chosen, in Whom My soul delights; I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry aloud or lift up His voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed He will not break, and a faintly burning wick He will not quench; He will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be discouraged till He has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for His law.
~ From Isaiah 42
True nobility is exempt from fear.
~ Marcus Tullius Cicero
Oh beloved, it is true.
We are powerful beyond measure. There is nothing that can stop us. We walk into a situation, and we are completely in control. And the end of this kind of thing, is that there is no end. We will be made like Him. All we have to do is ask. And the more we put our faith in the L_RD Jesus Christ, the faster this will happen. For our faith is both noun (a state of being) and verb (a very living action).
And then the impact we can make, goes completely off the scale. Totally off the charts.
We begin to disappear.
Oh, this is not into irrelevance. It is just that we begin to have influence over the dimension we call time. We are breaking away into something much bigger. And it is so much bigger that things like being in a hurry, or worrying about when something is going to happen, begin to sound silly in light of the context of our now-eternal Life in Him.
Can we see it?
It is a Kingdom thing. It is a principal that is inviolable. The deeper we go into servanthood, the more powerful we become. In the past, our talents and giftings were things we brought to the table – and rightly so. But, as our talents and giftings are finite, they quickly become too little for the gargantuan projects He begins to have us a be a part of.
And so, if we are wise, and if we allow it… We find that the bended knee, the quiet response, the allowing someone the last word, and the giving to others in need – are exceedingly more powerful than the influence we once brought by standing firm, or talking back, or finishing the conversation, or the getting what we need.
In general, people won’t understand. They will not be able to see beyond their own paradigm. They will be people who may deliberately put aside the thought bouncing around in their chest, that they are being Loved and served by the person in front of them. No matter. In a space like this, you – the submissive servant – have already brought a crushing victory to the situation.
So, are you feeling the desire to have an impact on the world? This is true and noble and just and virtuous and pure and lovely and honorable and worthy of praise. However, the path to this kind of influence is something completely other than what the world is trying to tell you.
Tonight is your night beloved. Time to live more powerfully than you could ever imagine: In service and submission.
Sweet mercy is nobility’s true badge.
~William Shakespeare
