Temptation’s Great Lie

He must have iron nails that scratches a bear.
~Russian Proverb

Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. I speak as to sensible people; judge for ourselves what I say. The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?

~paul, The Least of The Apostles, in 1 Corinthians 10

Oh beloved, it is true. There is a fact of life for the believer. We are going to be tempted.

The voice of the liar will reach out to us.

He will speak promises of a better life.
He will inject imaginations that everything will be ok.
He will hiss the words in our mind “did G_d really say?”
He will minimize the damage we might expect.
Then comes the biggest lie of them all… “I will leave you alone if you give in, just this once.”

No matter how many pleasures Satan offers you, his ultimate intention is to ruin you. Your destruction is his highest priority.
~Erwin W. Lutzer (1941- )

Something in us wishes this were true, but something deeper in us knows it is not. Beloved, stay on guard. The one who says he will leave you alone is the one who is the father of lies. Everything (read every thing) that comes from his lips is, by definition, a lie.

He will not leave you alone. The feint here is for the devil to divide our attention between all the good that G_d is doing in our lives and the bit of evil he may inject as a wedge in our integrity.

So, if we yield to the lie, there is a problem at hand. Once the wedge is inserted, another blow will most certainly be struck. And then, as the old preacher has said:

Sin will take you further than you want to go;
Cost you more than you want to pay;
And keep you longer than you want to stay.

Can we see it? There is no need to wax long in words here beloved. Run. Run in humility, resisting the devil and swinging the Sword of The Spirit. There is no doubt you will be victorious. And, just as certainly, there is no reason to stay on the scene and listen to any more lies.

So, are you thinking that giving in just once will make the temptation go away? May this fool of a writer invoke a standard form of two-word counseling?

STOP IT!

Temptation is the devil looking through the keyhole; yielding is opening the door and inviting him in.
~Billy Sunday (1862-1935)
