Cunning And Wisdom

Knowledge without justice ought to be called cunning rather than wisdom.
~ Plato

Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn away from them. Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Cherish her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you. She will give you a garland to grace your head and present you with a glorious crown.
~ from Proverbs 4

Oh beloved, there is fact – and then there is The Truth. And the wisdom that comes from the deep and reverential awe of The Truth, convinces us that there is only One Way and One Life. The world may scream that its tidbits and factoids are just as important as wisdom, but something in all of us knows that it is not true.

Somewhere in eternity the most gorgeous being was made, if not begotten. Wisdom. She is the dispenser and refractor of the Truth and Nobility and Justice and Purity and Love and Virtue and Praiseworthiness of her Creator.

Her voice sings forth from deep within the very Character of Love and Strength and Might. There is no limit to her range, for wisdom explores the abysmal chasms of the very heart and mind of G_d – and then shares this unfathomably rich grace with us.

To begin to know her, is to fall instantly in love.  For she is the very conduit of everything we ever hope to find. She, in all her goodness, passes to us what is simply unattainable in our own strength. And any time we begin leaning on our own fallen understanding, we can just as instantly tell the difference. Wisdom is infinite.  Human knowledge and cunning is limited and broken.  There is no comparison.

The nations rage and plot. Wisdom and Providence write history.

Man makes up ideas. Wisdom provides the very framework for thought itself.

People scheme to gain advantage. Wisdom invalidates the plans.

Criminals and politicians deploy their cunning. Wisdom and Truth always win.

Can we see it? Cunning and human knowledge are but the vassals of a fallen and limited being full of pride. And even though this evil one has contorted the good creation of a good G_d into a cosmos designed only to distract us from our maker, all (read every single one) of the schemes of the devil will eventually fail. For the created always have a need, and thus must take from something else to exist. And in the taking, the cunning of the created will run out of its own material to devour.

Enter wisdom. Wisdom again, is the conduit of the infinite Source of all in all. Wisdom does not run out, it flows. Wisdom does not falter, because it goes through no steps of calculation, nor is it derived. Wisdom is a reflection of the astounding simplicity of G_d. And as such, it is a joyful and unending source of strength to those who would receive her.

So beloved, are you trying to figure out G_d? Are you trying to create your own ways to navigate through the situations before you? May this fool of a writer suggest something? Stop. Lean not on the cunning and calculating ways of this fallen system. Abandon hope in all that is ultimately hopeless anyway, and acknowledge your need for His wisdom. Wait for it. She will most surely come in portions and ways you never thought possible.

The whole history of the world is discovered to be but a contest between the wisdom of God and the cunning of Satan and fallen men. The outcome of the contest is not in doubt.
~A. W. Tozer (1897-1963)
