Odyssey

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

— John 10:10

All of everything is surely all about Him. The astounding over-pressure of His glory is an unstoppable wave pervasive throughout the universe. He is indeed All-in-All. There is none other even worth considering. And then to know beyond all this: that He Loves us – personally – with an everlove of everything that He is… No truer joy and strength can come from His faithfulness in this matter.

First, He shows Himself to us. He rips us out of ourselves alive, and we suddenly realize there is nothing else… Only Him! And He is wonderful beyond everything.

Then, we begin to see that the glory of God is not some fleeting virtue to be sought. It is that pervasive Brightness towards which we have the privilege to point people with our lives.

Oh, that we might live in such a way that people would also understand Who the Source of that Brightness truly is! This is the life of a bondservant. We are called to show through us the abundant life that Jesus has given us.

For each of us this will look different. And sometimes it will look very different. Some will look like pastors, some like teachers, some like plumbers, some like grandmothers, some like forms truly mighty in the kingdom (two come to mind: simple-hearted, faith-filled children, and women who serve church food with truest love and hospitality). Some will be great connectors of G_d’s goodness, interceding on their knees and across time. Others will be warriors or poets.

And some will be like those summer staff camp-workers who strap kids into Odyssey All-Terrain Vehicles so they can go flying around the track. Their sacred job is to first express the great joy of taking the ride! Then they explain some of the rules; some of the risks… Seatbelts on! Helmet strapped! Stay in your lane! Come in high, go out low to go faster! Stay aware! Understand that the machine has everything you need to get you around the track with safety and speed… trust it.

Then they line up the young riders who have volunteered to try the adventure of the week. Some of the kids are nervous, some geeky, some confident, but all are strapped in and ready to go… what a great job for a privileged few! Can we see it yet?

There is an absolutely jaw-droppingly abundant life in Christ awaiting each of us. Get in beloved! Strap in. Let’s ride in the odyssey He has set before us! Let’s ride.
